Heraklion city

Visit Heraklion – Car Rental from Kourites

Heraklion is the largest city in Crete (including Chania, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos, Sitia, Ierapetra) whose symbol is Koules Venetian Fortress and harmoniously blends a multilingual history as Byzantine churches standing next to the mansions of Veneto.

Stay long enough and you can even begin to like the place; the sea, as well as the area’s antiquites, excellent food and friendly, welcoming people make this place a delightful place to visit.

Heraklion or Iraklion has undergone a significant makeover in recent years – this is a result of being chosen as an Olympic city …partly bu mostly because of the city’s increasing prosperity. Infrastructure works have included redevelopment of the waterfront ( have a nice walk there ), improved roads and a city bypass to ease traffic congestion and maybe the most important much of the historic centre has been turned into pleasant pedestrian strips. Let’s see how you could spent one or two days in Heraklion.

In Heraklion, the main city and key business center of Crete, you have a day or two to spend. Also, the city is a major destination for cruises. There is plenty to do and plenty of things worth seeing, beyond the insane progress of moped riders, noisy scooters and a broken, out-of-control look at the area.

On Daedalou Street (“Daydaloo”), apart from shopping and designer clothing, there are several small shops off all the main streets that sell certain local items that are commonly used when you live in Crete. Only look along 1866 Street and its side streets more so – you will find a curio that is markedly different from more traditional “gifts” sold in gift shops to tourists.

Unfortunately, the popular tourist attraction, the Saturday market by the port, a nearly kilometer-long show of fruit and vegetables and assorted products, has now relocated to an obscure suburb. This is a brief guide to some of Heraklion’s well-known and some less well-known pleasures and rewards.
