Spinalonga is a tiny island in East Crete near Elounda. Spinalonga is also known as the Leper Island, as until 1957 it was quarantined by lepers from Crete and the rest of Greece.
Today, every summer, thousands of tourists visit Spinalonga by boat from Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Plaka for a tour of its abandoned buildings, laboriously maintained by the Archaeological Service.
